Will ChatGPT recommend your business?
A free, jargon free guide to getting found when your customers ask AI for a recommendation.

Try the 5 minute self check, free
This is the self check from the guide, in full. No sign up needed. See what the AI tools already say about you.
Grab a coffee and open a new browser tab. You’ll check four tools: ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Gemini (gemini.google.com), Claude (claude.ai) and Perplexity (perplexity.ai). They’re all free to try.
Type these in, swapping in your own trade and town
Example: if you’re an electrician in Rolleston, replace [trade] with "electrician" and [town] with "Rolleston".
- "Can you recommend a good [trade] in [town], New Zealand?"
- "Who are the best rated [trade] businesses in [town]?"
- "I need a [trade] in [town] who can [a specific service you offer]. Who should I contact?"
- "What can you tell me about [your business name] in [town]?"
Prompt 3 is a good one to try a few versions of. Use the real jobs your customers ask you for, like "fix a leaking hot water cylinder" or "see me on a Saturday".
What to look for
Jot your answers down for each tool.
- Did your business come up at all? Whether the AI knows you exist for this kind of search.
- Who came up instead? Who you’re competing with in AI answers.
- When you asked about your business by name, was the information correct? Whether your details are clear and consistent online.
- Did it get your services, location or hours wrong? Which listings or pages need updating.
- Did it mention reviews, or quote what customers say? How much weight your reviews are carrying.
- Did it link to your website as a source? Whether your site is being read and trusted.
AI answers can change from one day to the next, and two people asking the same question may see different results. That’s normal. You’re looking for patterns, not a single score. If you don’t show up anywhere, or the details are wrong, that’s your starting point. Don’t worry if the results are disappointing. Most small businesses aren’t set up for this yet, which means a little effort can make a real difference.
