This is page three of the kit, in full. No sign up needed. Work through it this fortnight and you’ll have the foundations most new businesses skip.

Get your foundations right

Lock in your business name and domain

  • Check your name is available everywhere. Why: changing your name later is painful and costly, so check before you print anything. How: use ONECheck (onecheck.co.nz) to search company names, trade marks, domain names and social media handles in one go. If your name is close to an existing trade mark, take a closer look at IPONZ before you commit.
  • Register your domain. Why: your own domain looks credible and it’s yours for good. A free page on someone else’s platform isn’t. How: choose a .co.nz or .nz domain that matches your business name. Keep it short and easy to spell out loud. If you can, register the obvious variations too, so no one else can grab them.
  • Set up a professional email address. Why: [email protected] builds more trust than a free email address. How: most domain and email providers can set this up in under an hour. Use it on everything from day one.
  • Get your business details in order. Why: consistent business details make you easier to verify and easier to find. How: write down your exact business name, address, phone number and opening hours in one document. Use these exact details everywhere online. Same spelling, same format, every time.

Claim your Google Business Profile

  • Create and verify your profile. Why: when someone searches for what you do near them, this is often the first thing they see. Only 35% of small businesses have one. How: go to google.com/business and sign in with your business email. Follow the steps to add your business. Google will ask you to verify that you’re genuine, and the method it offers can vary, so allow some time for this.
  • Fill in every section. Why: a complete profile gives Google, and your customers, more reasons to trust you. How: choose the most accurate primary category. Add your services, service area, hours, phone number and website. Write a clear, jargon free description of what you do and who you do it for.

Elizabeth Slade, Owner and Managing Director, C i Marketing

I started C i Marketing in 2011, after the Christchurch earthquakes ended my tourism job. Since then I’ve rebuilt this business through tough times, COVID included. I built Debut because I kept meeting passionate small business owners who couldn’t afford a traditional agency website. This kit is for you.
